Perhaps even more insidious are those publications, both print and online, who sell themselves as 'health' magazines. A quick squiz reveals that they do not question whether you will pursue a 'diet' at some time, only what form that 'diet' will take. http://www.sofeminine.co.uk/health/diets-sr40.html The Forking Diet??!!!!

That is fascinating - and your point about weight gain is so important. What irritates me so much about this ignorance around nutrition is that it opens up a space where all sorts of quacks advise the most appalling nonsense.

And I'm so pleased you like the post!

Mmmm good post! Two things : I once asked my (male) family doctor if eating a certain food would cause a certain reaction. He sighed, and said - I spent 7 years studying medicine, and in that time we had one lecture of 45minutes on nutrition and food. Why don't YOU tell ME the effects of eating that food, he said.
And second - a friend was ill and got painfully thin. I realised that my life spent keeping my weight "down" meant I had NO CLUE what to advise someone who needed to eat to gain weight. It was a nasty self-realisation moment.

I agree - something has gone terribly wrong. And I must think more about this carb-phobia. It's utterly ridiculous.

Thanks so much for your comment! I hadn't realised the extent of this body tyranny in the Netherlands. I agree, I thought that Dutch women would be more sensible than that.

I live in the Netherlands, and one would presume that the general opinion about what makes a 'good woman' are a bit more down to earth here. That might have be the case a decade or so ago, but nowadays Dutch women, especially the <40 year olds, strain their necks from looking up to their American 'peers' and adopting their opinions as much as possible.
It has gotten to the point where some stick-figured girlie at the gym advised me, totally out of the blue and without being asked, advised me to swap my current breakfast of a piece of fruit and two slices of wholemeal bread for fried eggs and bacon, because the meal of my choice contained 'too many carbohydrates'.
I'd say: the day a 'health instructor' advises you to choose saturated fats and proteines over vitamins and fibers, something has gone terribly wrong in society.
